A bright white
healthy smile goes a long way to making you look
and feel great.
Patients who have undergone a tooth whitening transformation
say that the results have given them a significant
boost to their self- confidence.
Teeth darken in time due
to “intrinsic” staining,
ie stains within the tooth structure. Coloured foods
eg, tea, coffee, wine and pasta / curry sauces take
their toll. Coloured compounds form within the enamel
and absorb light. This gives the teeth that drab,
lifeless, darker look. The whitening process breaks
down these compounds and restores that white, sparkling
vitality to teeth. Even teeth stained by medicines
eg Tetracycline antibiotics respond well to extended
whitening times. Routinely, we find significant results
within days and people usually reach their ideal
colour within 2-3 weeks. The result can last up to
two years or more, although we find most patients ‘top-up’ for
a couple of days every 6-8 months.
Note – Whitening toothpastes have a limited
effect as they only deal with “extrinsic” staining,
ie, surface stains. They have no effect on deep down
stains.
